zBoot
Manager Installation Wizard
Situation:
My hard disk size is 60G and currently have one
partition(10G primary partition) with Windows 2000 and another
extended partition(30G) with one logic driver D: for data. Now I want
to create another partition ( about 20G) to install Windows XP, and
make the D: shared between Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Installation steps:
-
Create a DOS startup floppy disk. If you have one DOS startup floppy
disk, skip this step.
You can use the starting floppy disk of Windows 98/Me etc. If you
hard disk is bigger than 8G, you should not use the DOS 6.0 or older version
since they can't support the big disk. One easy way to do this is to make a
start-up disk from Windows, Control Panel-->Add/Remove Program--> Make
startup disk. You can also download a Windows
98 boot disk here. Insert a floppy disk to A: and run it , it will
automatically create a bootable floppy disk.
-
Copy
ZBOOT.EXE to your startup floppy disk, and restart your computer with
that Disk. And then run zBoot Manager: A:\>zboot <ENTER>. At this
time, it will check your hard disk, and read your current partition
information. Once you see the Main Menu, use Disk tools->Backup current
MBR function to save your current MBR to a file. Obviously, you'd better
save it to your floppy disk.
-
From Main Menu, select "step 1 setup partition list". You can
now see your current partition list, now there should have 2 partitions,
one is your C: (No. 1, 10G, installed with Windows 2000)and the other one is
your D: ( No. 2, 30G). At the bottom panel, you can find a free block(10G).
Now, switch to bottom panel with <TAB> key and press <ENTER> to
create one partition( 10G, for Windows XP, NTFS or FAT32). Then press <ESC> to return to Main Menu.
-
Form Main Menu, select "Step 2 setup boot menu". There are
three windows here, you can use <TAB> to switch among them. In the
first window, you can find a menu item "operating system 1", it is
your current system. Press <R> key to rename it to "Windows
2000". The window below will list the partitions of Windows 2000 at
this time. Now, you can add another system. In the first window, press <INS> to add a new system,
input a name, i.e. Windows XP, use cursor keys to highlight it and use <TAB> to
switch to the window below( partition list window). Then Press <INS> to add partitions from
the partition list, now add the 2nd
partition(30G) and the 3rd partition (You just created) to Windows XP.
Highlight the 2nd one(10G) and press <SPACE> key to set it bootable. Press
<ESC> to return to Main Menu
-
Form Main Menu, select "Step 3 Install
zBoot Manager to hard
disk" to actually install it. Then remove your floppy disk and restart
your computer. You will see a boot menu with two menu items. one is
"windows 2000" the other one is "Windows XP". You can
select "Windows 2000", it will boot your windows 2000 as before. (You
can restore your MBR if there are some errors). If your current system works
well, restart your computer and select "Windows XP". Since you have not installed it, it
will display "OS loading Error!" or other error info, now restart your computer with
CD-ROM or Floppy disk to install Windows XP. Since at the last step, you
only select last two partitions for Windows XP, your old D: is still D: in
Windows XP. The one you just created will be C: in Windows XP. You can check it with
command: "dir D:". Now, you can install windows XP to C: as usual.
-
After you install Windows
XP, the boot menu may disappear, you just
need to run zBoot again and use "step 3 Install zBoot manger to hard
disk" again. Now remove the floppy disk and restart your
computer.
-
Now you have already two operating systems in your hard disk. Enjoy
it!!!
